DREAMS. When I was growing up, I dreamed about becoming a cowgirl, a nurse or a ballerina. Certainly not a writer, although I always loved to read. I didn’t know much about writers. It never occurred to me they were regular people and that I could grow up to become one, even though I loved to make up stories inside my head.
Running alongside my dreams were the dreams of a little boy named Yates. He was a maverick who took chances and who listened to a transistor radio under the covers at night dreaming of far-away places. He loved to make up stories inside his head.

STORIES. I made up stories while I rode my rocking horse. I made up stories playing with paper dolls. And I made them up while I practiced the piano in the small northern town where I grew up. And I never told anyone about them.
Yates made up stories while he rode real ponies. He made up stories while playing sand-lot baseball. Yates created make-believe characters about his family, friends and the locals in the small southern town where he grew up. He wrote his stories down and told everyone about them.

GROWN UP. When our dream-laden lives merged, we were no longer kids, but little boy Yates was always fully present. It shows up in The Witches Three Count on Me! When I met Yates I didn’t know it then, but his story would become mine. The Halloween story was a parting gift. He didn’t live to see it published but I know he’d be thrilled. It was his dream to share it with you. YES! Dreams do come true.
